In 1929 prewar Wrocław held exhibition “Dwelling and work place” as contemporary architects’ proposal of new model housing. The name WuWA is the acronym of German words “Wohnung und Werkraum Ausstellung”. In 2016 Wrocław as European Capital of Culture saw construction of the model housing estate which is planned as a project continuing the idea of prewar exhibition. Our contribution to the project for ECoC 2016 started as early as 2011 when we participated in creation of master plan to become basis for the planned estate and the housing quarter which we designed afterwards. More to read at projects' website. fot. Maciej Lulko.

WuWa Exhibition of 1929 was a model housing estate and exhibition area around and inside the famous Centennial Hall, now visited by tourists from all over the world. In the same city that was the European Capital of Culture in 2016, the Nowe Żerniki housing estate, also called WuWA2, was created as a project for the ECoC Wrocław 2016. The contemporary estate has been created as a continuation of model character of the pre-war predecessor, which was an attempt to solve housing and construction problems of the time; today, we are looking for solutions to today's problems in the context of sustainable design.

By looking for new solutions, a group of architects - WuWA creators has reached into the future, which is now our present. Both the Wuwa (1929) and WuWA 2 (2016) estates form a bridge between generations, even in the time space of more than a century of history. Our contemporary estate Nowe Żerniki - WuWA 2 is so important because it was created as a creative use and continuation of what previous generations have worked out, and for its architects it has been a starting point for further development, thereby preserving this valuable legacy for future generations (this is the basis of so called sustainable development).

The value of New Żerniki housing estate - WuWA 2 is that the housing quarters were created on the basis of the local master plan, created with the participation of architects of the housing estate. In the master plan, there are areas with recreational, service and cultural functions, including a cultural center and a church. Essential retail units provided in housing blocks are easily accessible, the same as and connection to the city's public transport system. The housing quarter designed by us is located in the central part of the first phase of the estate, which is currently under construction.
